On Vox: The New Westminster Library, (best library evar?)

Parasite Eve
Hideaki Sena

It got up to 8 degrees today, which to this former-Albertan is still pretty amazing in early February. It's the first of a few days off for Jamie, so we decided to go uptown for a coffee. We tend to take a pretty similar route every time, so we pass the library quite often on our way to Tim Hortons or wherever. For some reason this time, Jamie said "hey, wanna get a library card?" and I said "why the heck not?" Jamie's had a card for a while and he occasionally stops on his way home from work so that hasn't been much call for me having my own card yet.

We get me my card, and I didn't really intend to borrow anything right away, but I really dig libraries (I even worked in the library at my high school for work placement credit) and so couldn't resist just wandering around a bit at least. We puttered around in fiction for a bit, and stumbled upon a whole section full of MANGA and GRAPHIC NOVELS! That might not seem odd or special to anybody else, but I've never been in a library that carried either of those things before. I picked up an Oh! My Goddess trade edition (I have a few issues but they're mostly all back in Alberta still), Sandman 1 Preludes and Nocturnes, and The Dark Knight Returns, which was so huge when it came out there was a waiting list at the one comic store in town, and I never did end up getting to so much as read somebody else's copy.

We also picked up Roverandum, a collection of short stories by Tolkien written for his children about a little toy dog they lost at the beach, and the very very best and most EPIC awesome find of all, an English translation of the Japanese novel Parasite Eve!

Yes folks, the Playstation game was based on a NOVEL, more specifically it was a sequel to a film that was based off the novel. I was a big fan of PE back in the day and one of the reasons I tried to teach myself Japanese was so that I could read the book it was based on one day. I'd still love to be able to read it in the original Japanese one day, but at least now I can get the original story in something very close to it's original form.

It seems it was only published in English in 2005 too, so it's pretty recent. I'm positively thrilled to bits. ^_^

They also had one of the better arts and crafts sections I've ever come across. No snobbery about subject matter at all, the books on drawing and writing comics were right next to things like pottery and watercolor painting etc. It was all very diverse and quite up to date. If they allow you to bring a drink in something like a travel mug I'm so hanging out there all the time.

You have been warned (spammers)

Looks like I'd left commenting open to everyone, got my first LJ comment spam. It was totally weird. So now IPs are being logged and all future comments will be screened (if you're not on my friends list that is).

Posting spam in Russian will not save you either. Especially when the spammy keywords are in English, ya jerks.

On Vox: Nibblr's first Halloween

I don't feel like it's Halloween without candles, so I stepped out to the dollar store and picked up some sturdy tea lights and a couple of holders. Nibblr found them quite fascinating. Don't worry, he was very very supervised the whole time.

I was a bit concerned about him pawing at the candles, but I figured he'd discover that they were too hot to play with and leave them alone. What actually happened was that he almost immediately figured out how to put them out. ^_^

On Vox: Ibby, final version

I can't believe I never got around to posting the final version, I'm so distracted. :P

Anyhoo, here's the final version of the little WoW music video I did. The 2.2 patch has now gone live so I imagine Jamie and I will be making videos with our actual characters one day soon. I didn't change much in this version, just a few timing and sound tweaks, plus an extra cut away or two to break up a couple of the longer shots. It's also been optimized a bit for youtube posting so it might actually be a bit clearer. It would have been better if I hadn't been so worried about filling up my hard drive too much when I was shooting the individual clips, as I ended up with not really enough to do anything very interesting. I should probably free up a little extra space before the next one.

Show us a photo that's overexposed or underexposed but you love how it turned out.

I know I posted this just a couple weeks ago, but it's still awesome.

On Vox: Heeeeeeere's the kitty!

I wanted to post sooner but I was waiting until we'd settled on a name for the little guy. I now present to you, the bestest kitty in the universe...Nibbler!

He's a Bengal, with possibly a little Siamese in him too, if his blue eyes and Siamese-like voice are anything to go by. He's very chatty, and makes all sorts of interesting sounds that I suspect to be a language of his own invention. He's the first cat I've ever seen that actually uses the scratching post and doesn't scratch at the furniture at all. He's sort of a foundling, as he was left with a woman that Jamie works with a while back and his owner never came back for him.

Before he came to us another lady had taken him home for a trial, but he didn't get along with the older cat. The lady had actually thought about having him declawed, thinking that would solve the problem. *gasp!* Fortunately, that didn't happen, and he's now tucked up all safe and sound in our place.

He's incredibly precocious, and really delightful. We were told his name was Mister, but he never responded to it, and we weren't sure it really fit him, so the last several days we were wracking our brains for something that suited him better. Finally this afternoon Jamie said "hey, how about Nibbler?" and it seemed to be just right. ^_^

Which historical queen are you?

Your Score: Eleanor of Aquitaine

You scored 57% on ruling power!

You are: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of England and of France, 1122-1202. Eleanor was one of the most influential figures of the 12th century. Married at age fifteen to Louis VII of France, she later divorced him to marry Henry II, the future King of England. She bore Henry eight children, two of them future kings of England. Throughout her life she maintained control over her extensive lands in Southern France, and cleverly managed the lives of her children and grandchildren

On Vox: Aaaand here's the rest of them

I've finished those wedding pendants. ^_^ I threw in an extra green one because I was worried that one might be too dark or the other might be too pale, this way she can just pick whichever one looks appropriate when she has them all in her possession. I was trying to think of a nice freebie and that seemed to be the most useful. :)

On Vox: Old and busted

I just finished walking back up the hill to our apartment after visiting the store down at the bottom of the hill (3 or 4 blocks each way) and now I have a sharp piercing pain in my upper left back, right under the shoulder blade. I can't tell if it's a muscle spasm or something in my lung...and I wasn't even carrying anything heavy!

Silly me for wanting a bottle of juice. :(

Dang it

The plugin that I was using to crosspost no longer works since reinstalled WordPress. I guess it only functions if it's installed on a 2.1 version which is then upgraded and not on a fresh install of 2.2. I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a bit of paid time so I can do the feed thing. I'll keep ya posted.

More maintenance

Sorry for all these boring posts, but I thought I’d better make note of what I’m doing before I actually do it just in case. The server’s running nice and snappy but notification emails still aren’t being sent by WordPress and they haven’t been for 2 or three versions now. I’m going to do a fresh install just to rule out problems with WordPress itself. If that doesn’t do it then it’s probably something my host can fix. I hate to bug them again but I haven’t been able to get this to work for a couple months now. Wish me luck!

Temporary interuption of service

I’ve been finding the site very sluggish for a while. I’m going to try a couple of things to see if it fixes it. One of these things might involve a fresh install of wordpress. Apologies in advance if everything’s wonky for a bit here.

Edit: It’s fixed! I spoke with my host and they found that mysql just needed rebooting. I will be doing a bit of cleanup around here as well just to make sure it’s all optimized, but it’s not as urgent as I thought it was. Woot!

Watch this quick before Youtube gets sent a take-down notice. It’s neat to see everything laid out in sequence together like this.

Edit: Forgot to say I found this on Wil Wheaton’s Vox. Doh!

Bob Ross - Why I don’t paint people

Originally published at TheWeejenny.net. You can comment here or there.

A lovely little tune to kick off a quiet Saturday morning.

Fun fact: Bob was a huge influence on my becoming interested in Art from an early age, but despite this, I never did get very good at using paints (I’m more of a coloured pencil/graphite girl), and my subjects are almost exclusively people. :)

A few unorganized thoughts

Originally published at TheWeejenny.net. You can comment here or there.

I’m testing a WordPress Dashboard widget so I thought I’d just jot a few things down.

1. On the subject of Dashboards, after a few weeks of seeing multiple duplicate incoming links on my Wordpress Dashboard Technorati seems finally to have gotten smart and truncated the results. It was so bad it actually broke the layout in my Dashboard for a while, the little boxes at the bottom were shifted around kinda funny.

2. We went to Ikea yesterday to pick up replacement parts for our bed-frame that we lost when we moved (and to pick up a box of vitamins my mom shipped out to us from the Greyhound station) and this time we actually took the time to eat in the cafeteria. I have concluded that it is totally worth it to take the confusing train/bus trip just for those lovely Swedish Meatballs with Potatoes. *Mmmm, taters precious* As a side note, we also picked up a $12 pair of new frying pans, a coffee plunger press (to replace our broken coffee maker), 2 large ceramic juice tumblers (for our summer ice tea drinking needs) and the cutest widdle $3 stuffed cat. The cat is just big enough to sit under my non-mousing hand while I’m working and make me feel a bit less lonely for our departed furbabys. It’s Like a stress-ball, but terribly cute.

3. I just wanted to mention that my host had some hardware troubles recently that may have had something to do with some major slowdowns on the site. I couldn’t tell if it was my internet or something on their end, but it was bugging me so much I nearly began the process of moving the site Elsewhere. Glad I waited, moving is a big pain in the butt and I don’t want to do it again for a while. :(

4. Lastly, I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for a wire wrapping podcast. Nothing special, just maybe a sort of primer for folks starting out. I can think of a few things I can talk about that might fill a few minutes that might otherwise take a long time to put across in writing. I need to do something to learn the software anyway since Jamie and I will be doing podcasts when our joint project is underway. Just audio, I’ve already had a little practice with iMovie and things like that, it’s Garage Band that I need to get the basics down on now. If you can think of any questions that you think I should cover I would really love it if you’d send them in (either by commenting or posting in the forum or something, or email if you prefer) and I will totally give you credit and plug your website. Jamie is doing a big stretch of shifts all in a row next week so I’ll probably do it sometime then. I feel a little funny recording stuff when I’m not home alone for some reason, at least when I’m doing all the talking. It’ll be different when we start doing recordings together.

Cheers!

Jamie in the Plaguelands P.S. I found this picture of Jamie playing World of Warcraft. I think he’s teh cute when he’s all concentrate-y. ^_^

The activation email problem has been fixed. It was a conflict in the settings (which was of course, probably my fault), but it has been resolved. New sign-ups will now receive an activation email. If you do not get an activation email when you sign up please comment somewhere on the website (like this post for example) or send an email to jenny (at) theweejenny.net.

Cheers.
